How do I maintain my Moccamaster?

Taking good care of your Moccamaster coffee machine is important for a delicious cup of coffee and a long life of your machine. In this blog, we explain how and how often to descale and clean your coffee machine correctly.

The difference between cleaning and descaling

For the optimal taste experience and long life of your Moccamaster, regular maintenance is important. Maintenance can easily be done at home yourself and requires two agents: Durgol for descaling and Cleandrip for degreasing.

Limescale is the biggest enemy of any coffee machine. Regular descaling is therefore very important. While using your coffee machine, the lime in the water deposits on the inside of the machine and limescale forms. Among other things, these deposits are found in the heating element of your machine and cause the water to enter the filter less quickly and less hot. This negatively affects the taste of your coffee.

Degreasing the machine is especially necessary when the water reservoir is filled with the same glass jug or thermal jug that the coffee is brewed in. The ‘grease’ are residues of coffee oils that get into the heating element. Over time, this will affect the performance of the machine and will affect the taste of the coffee. In addition, coffee grease eventually creates a brown deposit in the water tank, which does not look pretty.

Why Durgol and Cleandrip?

Not every descaling or cleaning agent is equally friendly to your coffee machine. In any case, do not use (organic) descaling agents based on citric acid, as this results in a lasting bad taste of coffee because the acid is aggressive and starts a chemical reaction with the copper heating element. If you have already used a descaler with a high citric acid content, clean the machine several times with a soda solution, as this neutralises the effect of the citric acid. Then run the machine through several times with water.

Damage caused by an incorrect descaling or cleaning agent is not covered by the guarantee. Prevention is therefore better than cure and only use the products we recommend. Also useful: with Durgol and Cleandrip you can also clean your other household appliances, such as your kettle, thermal jug or iron.

How do I get started?

First of all, we recommend descaling and cleaning after every 100 coffee brews, which is equivalent to one pack of filter paper. This will ensure that your Moccamaster stays in top condition!

Descale:

Pour 1 to 2 cups of Durgol into the water tank.
Dilute this with the same amount of tap water.
Empty the filter holder.
Start the machine and let Durgol do its work.
After this, run the machine through two or three times with clean water. Do you use Cleandrip immediately after Durgol? Then you don't need to rinse the machine with water in between and can do that at the end of cleaning.
Is the limescale very stubborn? Then you can repeat the treatment.

With one bottle of Durgol, you can clean 3 to 6 times, depending on the amount of limescale.

Cleaning:

Fill the water tank of your Moccamaster.
Add 25 ml of Cleandrip.
Empty the filter holder.
Start the machine and let Cleandrip do its work.
After this, run the machine through two to three times with clean water.

With one bottle of Cleandrip, you can clean your coffee machine up to ten times.

Extra tips:
Now that your Moccamaster is completely clean from the inside, don't forget the loose parts too. Wash out your coffee pot with some soapy water and clean the loose parts. Do not put these in the dishwasher, as this could cause cracks in the parts. Clean the thermal jug only with a liquid detergent. For more information, check out our FAQ.

To take even better care of your appliance, we do not recommend filling the water tank with the glass or thermos jug you also use to make coffee. By using a clean carafe, you avoid the grease residue from the coffee ending up in the coffee machine.
