Questions

Usage

Making coffee for the first time

Are you using the Moccamaster for the first time, or have you not used it for a while? If so, run clean water through the machine first before making coffee.

How do I make the best coffee?

Great that you want to get the best out of your Moccamaster! You can find out how to make the best coffee and what you need to do so in this blog.

What grind size should I use?

We recommend a medium filter grind. The grind size determines the intensity of your coffee. The finer the grind, the more intense the flavour; a coarser grind, on the other hand, produces a milder cup. Do bear in mind that a grind that is too fine, such as for espresso, can clog the filter and cause it to overflow.

Why is my filter holder overflowing?

This may be due to:

  • Coffee ground too finely, such as an espresso grind or decaf
  • Too much coffee in the filter
  • The filter or filter holder is blocked; check and clean if necessary
  • The filter paper is not sitting properly in the filter holder. Fold the edges of the filter bag so that it sits securely in the filter holder
  • Is there a water softener on the water supply? This softened water has a lower EC value and higher surface tension, causing it to pass through the coffee more slowly. Advice: brew a maximum of 8 cups or use spring water. Do you have a KBG Select? If so, set the switch to the half-pot position
  • Is the KBGT overflowing? This may be because you have not attached the supplied base plate to the machine.

How does the warming plate on the KBG (Select) work?

This keeps coffee warm at 80–85°C and switches off automatically after 40 minutes.

My KBGT (coffee maker with thermos flask) isn’t working

Do you have a KBGT manufactured before 2025? If so, the white button in the base may be stuck. Please contact us for a suitable solution.

AO after 40 minutes

The KBG (Select) switches off automatically after 40 minutes. This is an EU regulation for all domestic appliances with a warming plate.

Would you like to enjoy your coffee for longer? Briefly switch the machine off whilst pouring and switch it back on as soon as you replace the jug to reset the timer. Or pour the coffee into a thermos flask.

The light on the Select switch goes out

The light in the Select button switch (the right-hand switch) comes on as soon as you start brewing coffee. This light does not come on before or after brewing. This is normal for the machine and is not a fault.

Maintenance

How often should I descale and clean the machine?

Every 100 brews or 1 pack of filter paper (more often if the water is hard).

How do I descale my machine?

We recommend Durgol Universal descaler. Do not use vinegar or organic descaling agents. Follow the steps on the packaging or read our step-by-step maintenance blog.

How do I clean my machine?

For cleaning from the inside, we recommend our own brand, Cleandrip. Follow the steps on the packaging or read our step-by-step maintenance blog.

How do I clean the removable parts?

After making coffee, rinse the glass or thermos flask with clean water to ensure as little coffee residue as possible remains.

Do not put the parts in the dishwasher, as this will shorten their lifespan. We also recommend removing the lid from the glass jug as little as possible, so that the contact points do not become loose.

How do I clean the thermos flask?

Clean the thermos flask with hot water and a little washing-up liquid, a dishwasher tablet, Cleandrip or Durgol. Fill with hot water and the cleaner, leave to stand for an hour and then rinse thoroughly. Do not use a washing-up brush inside the flask and do not put the thermos flask in the dishwasher.

My machine is running slowly, why is that?

This may be due to a blockage, probably caused by limescale. Thoroughly descaling with Durgol Universal descaler usually resolves this. If this doesn’t work, please fill in the repair form.

How do I clean the KM5 coffee grinder?

Read the step-by-step maintenance guide for the grinder.

There is rust in my water tank and/or overflow pipe

The overflow pipe, the cover cap and the screws in the water reservoir are made of stainless steel. Therefore, it is unlikely to be rust. Brown deposits are usually limescale combined with residual coffee oils. To remove this, we recommend using a brush and soapy water or a Durgol solution.

KM5 Coffee Grinder

What grind size should I use?

We recommend a medium-coarse grind for filter coffee, which is grind settings 4 to 6 on the KM5 coffee grinder. The finer the grind, the more intense the flavour; a coarser grind, on the other hand, produces a milder cup.

Which brewing methods is the KM5 suitable for?

The KM5 grinds from medium-fine to coarse. This includes French Press, Cold Brew, Pour Over, Drip Coffee (Moccamaster), Siphon, Moka pot/Bialetti, Medium-Fine Drip and AeroPress. The KM5 coffee grinder is less suitable for a fine espresso grind.

When should the grinding discs be replaced?

Grinding discs last for up to ±250 kg, which equates to ±27 kg per year with daily use. In other words, they last for years.

What type of grinding discs does the KM5 coffee grinder have?

There are conical and flat variants. Grinding discs grind coffee beans evenly. The KM5 has flat grinding discs, which ensure a more consistent grind, releasing less heat in the process. Together, this results in a better flavour.
