The origins of Moccamaster: made in Amerongen
Since 1968, Moccamaster filter coffee machines and coffee grinders have been handmade by Technivorm in Amerongen, a village set amid the natural beauty of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Here, each machine is manufactured not only with an eye for detail, but also with a strong ethical and sustainable production process. Every piece of machine, from the unique copper heating elements to the durable aluminium housing, is designed and assembled in Amerongen to last for generations.
Why Amerongen?
Amerongen may not be a big town where many brands set up shop, but it is centrally located and has provided plenty of room for factory expansion over the years. When Technivorm was founded in 1964 by Gerard Clement Smit, it started with a small office in Elst, where in the first two years it mainly produced stepladders and stacking racks. In 1965, Technivorm made a U-turn to the coffee industry and launched its first coffee grinder, the KM1.
From 1967, the premises moved from Elst to Amerongen, where for the next few years it was still located behind the founder's house in Amerongen's ‘old village’. Due to the enormous growth of Moccamaster, which was given its current brand name in 1974, it was time to move to Amerongen's industrial estate in 1988. The site where the factory stands to this day. Here was room to grow and expand. By now, half the industrial estate is occupied by Technivorm's factory.
Production in harmony with the environment
Amerongen is not just another production site; it reflects Moccamaster's values of environmental awareness and quality. Surrounded by forest and nature, the factory brings together craftsmanship with a sustainable outlook. Moccamaster aims to minimise its carbon footprint and produces with replaceable parts, making the machines suitable for long-term use. In addition, the roof of the newest building is entirely fitted with solar panels to generate sustainable electricity for production as well.
