How it is made: The Moccamaster filter coffee machine
Brewing filter coffee with Moccamaster is fast and easy but how does it work? And how do they make such a machine? In this blog we will explain to you how a Moccamaster machine is made and why our machines are so sustainable.
Let’s start at the very beginning
How is it made? All Moccamaster filter coffee machines are made by hand at Technivorm, the producer of the coffee makers. By means of an assembly line, the separate parts are put together and made to form one machine. Those separate parts exist, among others, out of the copper heating element, the glass or thermos jug, aluminum cover, stainless steel outlet pipe, and the water reservoir.

Now the question: Why is Moccamaster so sustainable? Since 1968 the Moccamaster filter coffee machine is being produced. Besides some changes in the design, the formula has remained the same. This means that we are still using sustainable and high quality materials that will last a long time.
A Moccamaster coffee machine can last up to 20 years. Besides it longevity, most parts can also be replaced in case something breaks or if there is a technical issue, our technicians can often fix the problem. In comparison to many other coffee machines, the Moccamaster is therefore very sustainable and characterized by its splendid quality.
Another sustainable factor is the copper heating element. Copper is a very good material for conducting heat and naturally kills bacteria!
After the water has run out of the reservoir and through the outlet pipe, this copper heating element will switch off automatically. And so does the hot plate, which will switch off automatically after 40 minutes. This all makes for a smart and safe coffee machine investment!

All about that perfect cup of coffee
How it works? After you have switched on your Moccamaster, the first thing that happens is that the heating element will start to warm up. After about 30 seconds, this element will be so hot that the water, that runs through from the water reservoir, is almost boiling. The hot water will shoot up through the glass tube towards the outlet pipe. Then the water is poured over the grind coffee!
Once the water is heated, its temperature will be between 92 and 96 °C – the perfect temperature for a perfect cup of coffee. When the water is colder, the coffee would taste sour. When the water is warmer than 96 °C, the coffee would taste bitter.
Now that the water is pouring over the grind coffee, it will slowly start dripping into the jug. Depending on how many cups of coffee you are brewing, it will take 4 or 6 minutes. This is the amount of time needed to extract the perfect flavour from the grind coffee. The coffee jug will fill up from the bottom because of the smart mixing tube, making sure of a balanced flavour and a perfect cup of coffee.
