Why does the Moccamaster KBG Select switch off after 40 minutes?
The Moccamaster KBG Select always turns off automatically after 40 minutes. A change since 2015 that raises questions for many people, but has a very good reason. In this blog, we therefore explain why this machine switches off after 40 minutes.
Household appliance legislation
Sustainability has been the talking point of the day in recent years. This also affects how we use and are allowed to use our appliances. In 2015, the European Union came up with new legislation for household appliances. Namely, all espresso and filter coffee machines with a hot plate must switch off automatically after 40 minutes. This should prevent you from leaving the coffee pot on a hot plate all morning, consuming energy throughout the day, with a greater risk of dangerous situations.
With these regulations, the EU wants to ensure safer use of household appliances and also aims to reduce energy consumption. This saves on energy costs for the user, but also helps to reduce environmental impact.
Safe coffee brewing
After the KBG Select's brewing process, the copper heating element in the machine switches off automatically, but the hot plate on which the glass coffee pot is placed remains hot at a temperature of 80-85°C for another 40 minutes. This gives coffee drinkers enough time to enjoy their coffee carefree. After all, fresh coffee tastes best. Still think 40 minutes is a bit too short? Then simply turn the machine on again after it switches off automatically. If the water tank is not filled with water, the KBG Select automatically recognises that only the hot plate needs to be switched on again for another 40 minutes.
Machines with a glass jug produced before 2015 do not yet have this function and do stay on. So don't forget to switch these off as soon as the coffee pot is empty for your own safety and energy bill.
Other models
The KBGT and the Cup-One are the models without a hot plate and therefore do not have this function. These models both switch off after brewing coffee so you can enjoy your coffee carefree here too.
