How does a Moccamaster coffee machine work?
With a Moccamaster, you can make a full pot of filter coffee in no time. But how exactly does the famous filter coffee machine work? In this blog, we will tell you more about how the Moccamaster's advanced brewing technology works.
Preparation
Always fill the water reservoir of your Moccamaster with clean tap water, preferably using a clean carafe and not the glass- or thermal jug to avoid coffee residues in the water reservoir. Then place a white filter paper with the correct amount of ground coffee in the filter holder. Why white filter paper? You can read more about that in this blog.
If you have the KBG Select, check that the Select switch is in the right position. For 4 to 6 cups, use the half pot function and above 6 cups use the full pot function. Whether you brew a full or half jug; your coffee is always right in flavour and temperature thanks to the Moccamaster KBG Select's unique two-stage heating element. In fact, the half-pot function ensures that the water does not run through as quickly, giving you the same perfect extraction time as when you brew a full pot of coffee. Start brewing process
Once you've filled your Moccamaster with the right amounts of water and coffee, it's time to brew coffee. When you turn on the power switch, the copper heating element inside the machine immediately starts to heat up.
After about 30 seconds, this element is so hot that the water inside almost boils. This causes the hot water to shoot up through the glass tube towards the overflow pipe. From the 9-hole overflow pipe, the water is evenly distributed over the ground coffee in the filter holder, after which it slowly drips into the pot.
Temperature
The temperature of water coming out of the overflow pipe is not boiling water. This is very important because boiling water will burn your coffee and make it taste bitter. Too cold water, on the other hand, will make your coffee taste sour. The heating element ensures that the water reaches between 92 and 96°C, which is the perfect temperature for the perfect cup of coffee.
Mixing pipe and brewing time
Through the mixing pipe, located in the lid of both the glass jug and the thermal jug, the coffee flows evenly into the jug. This ensures a homogeneous taste of the coffee as it builds up from below. In addition to the perfect temperature, every Moccamaster is designed with the perfect coffee brewing time in mind. For a full pot, this is 6 minutes and for half a pot with the KBG Select, or one cup with the Cup-One, it is 4 minutes.

Drip stop
At the bottom of the filter holder, the KBGT and KBG Select have an automatic drip stop. Not only does this ensure a cleaner coffee experience, it also allows you to pour a cup of coffee if you can't wait for the water to flow completely. The drip stop temporarily stops the flow of coffee when the jug is no longer under it. If you put the jug back, the coffee automatically starts flowing again.
Keeping warm and switching off
With the KBG Select, the heating element switches itself off automatically as soon as the water tank is empty. The coffee is then kept warm on the hot plate at 80-85°C regardless of the amount of coffee and switches itself off after 40 minutes. The KBGT and the Cup-One both switch off automatically after brewing coffee. So no matter which model you choose, you can enjoy your coffee worry-free.
