The right grind: the key to perfect filter coffee

The right grind: the key to perfect filter coffee
March 24, 2025

Are you ready to take your coffee to barista level? In this blog, we dive into the world of filter coffee and discover which coffee best suits your taste.

Choosing the right grind is essential for a tasty cup of filter coffee. To brew filter coffee with your Moccamaster, you should choose quick filter grind. This grind is slightly coarser than espresso grind but finer than coarse grind, which in turn is used with, for example, a French Press, Cold Brew or percolator.

Coffee beans: Arabica vs. Robusta

Did you know that there are two main types of coffee beans? These are the Arabica and Robusta bean. Arabica is known for its smooth, aromatic taste with a pleasant acidity, while Robusta has a more powerful, bitter taste with a higher caffeine content. In fact, this differs by almost 50% with the Arabica bean. Want to read more about the difference in these beans and learn which one suits your taste best? Then also read this blog

 Roasting and flavour profiles

The roasting of coffee beans plays a big role in the final flavour profile of your coffee. We differentiate them into three types:

  • Light roast: Fruity and floral notes, higher acidity.
  • Medium roast: Balanced flavour with hints of caramel and nuts.
  • Dark roast: Intense, bitter flavours with chocolate and smoky notes.

We have also written a blog on how to roast your own coffee to have full control over the flavour of the beans. This way, you can play around with different roasts and discover your favourite flavour profile. You can read all about it in this blog.

Origin: taste differences per continent

The region where coffee is grown also influences the taste considerably. In a specialty coffee shop, you can often buy coffee from many different countries, each with its own flavour. Again, it is fun to try different coffees from different regions to experience the unique flavour profiles and pick your favourite. To give you already a start in this flavour discovery, these are generally the flavours you can recognise by continent:

  • Africa: Bright, fruity and floral flavours.
  • South America: Sweet, chocolate and nutty notes.
  • Asia: Earthy, spicy and full-bodied flavours.

Additional tips for the ultimate filter coffee experience

  • Water quality: Use filtered water for pure taste. Also, always pour the water with a clean carafe used only for water into your machine to avoid coffee residues in your machine.
  •  Water temperature: Ideally between 92°C and 96°C for optimal extraction. Something you obviously don't need to think about when brewing coffee with a Moccamaster.
  • Fresh grind: Grind your coffee beans just before brewing for the freshest flavour. Learn more about that and how the KM5 coffee grinder is the best choice in this in this blog.
  • White filter paper: Unlike brown filter paper, white filter paper has no flavour, making it the best choice for the perfect cup of coffee.
  • Clean machine: hopefully we don't need to tell you this, because a clean and well-maintained machine naturally makes for the tastiest cup of coffee. How to do this, you can read in this blog.

With these insights, you will be ready to brew your perfect cup of filter coffee. Enjoy your coffee adventure!
